The Good News Report At Mount Pearl Intermediate for 2011 - 2012
Youth Innovation At MPI [Janurary 20, 2011] |
In December we were pleased to learn that our recent application for funds available through the Department of Innovation, Trades and Rural Development was accepted. A portion of the funds dispersed through the application have already been used to purchase 20 notebook computers along with wireless connection points which are now in the process of being set up on a trolley as a mobile computer lab which teachers can sign out and bring to their class when our current two computer labs are being used by other groups. Plans for the remaining funds include workshops for our video production team and the purchase of additional equipment. |
Differentiated Instruction At MPI [Janurary 20, 2011] |
Students from homeroom 8-2, 8-3, 8-4, 8-5 and 8-7 along with math teachers Ms. Hull, Ms. Penney and Ms. Warren had students working on math centers for the fraction unit. The centers included: a Smartboard activity with a matching game, playing cards to multiply and divide fractions, problem solving with fractions, playing Connect 4 using multiplication, and making a foldable focused on multiplication and division properties. Students in grade 9 from homeroom 9-1, 9-4, 9-8 and 9-9 along with math teachers Ms. Penney and Ms. Hull had students involved in math jeopardy with all questions forming a cumulative review of the material covered this year. In homeroom 7-5 Ms. Penney had her students complete a math mystery. Students were in pairs and had to solve the mystery of who stole Santa's toy list. The questions focused on the Unit 3 concepts of fractions, decimals and percents – each successful solution provided students with additional clues to the mystery solution. In grade 7 science Ms. Bates provided her grade 7 students a choice board to help them become familiar with the content of their new chapter. Students had the choice of completing a foldable, creating a song or poem, preparing a set of study cards or creating a quiz for the new section. Each activity had a detailed and structured outline to guide students through the expectations for the particular activity they selected. Junior High Core French classes spent their class time studying the French words for various articles of clothing. This was done by reading a story about Santa and his clothes, watching an on-line video, singing a song and creating articles of clothing from construction paper. Items were then hung from the classroom clothes lines. |
Career Fair [Janurary 13th, 2012] |
On Thursday of this week our grade 7 students were participants in a career fair held in our Learning Resource Centre. During their visit to the fair students were able to get career information from several schools and organizations including: College of the North Atlantic, Carpenters Millwright College, Canadian Coast Guard, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Faculty of Science and Engineering at MUN, and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary. Also represented were Skills Canada and the Career Initiative through the Provincial Government. Students were grouped and rotated through each of the displays where they were given information, asked questions, dressed in their favorite career costume, and followed MUN`s robot. Our thanks to Ms. Park, Career Development Liaison Officer with ESDNL, and to Ms. Power for their efforts in organizing and offering the fair to our students. |

Healthy Commotion [October 12, 2011] |
|
On Wednesday students and staff put on their character education team colours: purple for citizenship, green for responsibility, red for caring, yellow for respect, blue for trustworthiness, and orange for fairness. Students and staff then participated in a grade level based Healthy Living Commotion designed to emphasize the importance of teamwork and exercise in maintaining a healthy life. In celebration of the day students were provided with a complimentary healthy snack in the form of fruit trays placed in the cafeteria and in each of the elementary classrooms. To end the day students and staff participated in a short walk from the school through the back parking lot, along Michener Avenue and back to the school. While the walk was part of our Healthy Living Commotion, students were also encouraged to make a donation to cancer research in the memory of Terry Fox. Our thanks to the Mount Pearl Municipal Enforcement division who, through use of several Municipal Enforcement vehicles, provided support by providing assistance with traffic control to ensure the safety of our students and staff during the walk

Interactive Whiteboards/Smartboards [September 25, 2011] |
We are delighted to be able to inform our school community that as of this week we now have Interactive Whiteboard (Smartboard) technology installed in all of classrooms where mathematics is being taught. Interactive Whiteboards are an exciting technology which can make learning much more interactive for students and can allow them to explore topics in a variety of ways. With our latest additions, we now have 23 Interactive Whiteboards installed in the school including all of our elementary classrooms, our mathematics classrooms and in each of our department head teachers’ classrooms, in addition to others in selected classrooms in the building. Our technology plan calls for the installation in all remaining classrooms by the end of the 2012-2013 school year. It is our hope that through the prudent use of our assigned school budget, through initiatives of the Department of Education, and through the continued generosity and support of our parents and students during our annual fundraisers, that we will be able to achieve our goal.
